The Medina of Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd

- Lunch
The Medina of Tunis on foot
UNESCO World Heritage · 1979Entrance included
The medina of Tunis has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 and is still the working centre of the old city. You walk in from one of the gates, past the fondouks and the covered souks, to the Zitouna Mosque at its heart.
Carthage above the gulf
UNESCO World Heritage · 1979Entrance included
Carthage is a second World Heritage site, spread across a residential hill above the sea rather than gathered behind one fence. The Punic city and the Roman city that replaced it are both here, with the gulf on the horizon from almost every point.
Sidi Bou Saïd, blue and white
Entrance included
The first day ends in the clifftop village where every wall is whitewashed and every door and grille is the same blue. The cobbled main street climbs to a lookout over the marina; coffee is yours to pay for.

Day 2
Kairouan and the amphitheatre of El Jem
- Back to your own hotel
- Lunch
The Great Mosque of Kairouan
Entrance included
Kairouan is often called the fourth holy city of Islam. Its Great Mosque, founded in 670, is the oldest place of worship in the Muslim West: a marble courtyard, a square minaret and a prayer hall carried on ancient columns.
The Aghlabid Basins
Entrance included
Two great circular reservoirs on the edge of the old town, built to hold the city’s water supply. Seen from the viewing platform, the geometry is the whole story.
The medina of Kairouan
UNESCO World Heritage · 1988Entrance included
The medina is a World Heritage site in its own right and the best place in Tunisia to watch carpets being knotted. It is also the home of makroudh, the date-filled semolina pastry sold by the kilo.
El Jem: the amphitheatre and its museum
UNESCO World Heritage · 1979Entrance included
El Jem was Thysdrus, grown rich on olive oil. Its amphitheatre, built of cut stone on flat ground, measures 148 by 122 metres and held around 35,000 spectators. The archaeological museum nearby holds the mosaics that paved the town’s villas; both tickets are included.

Day 3
Hammamet, Sousse and Monastir
- Back to your own hotel
- Lunch
The medina of Hammamet
Entrance included
A small walled medina on a headland, with the kasbah at one end and the beach running out from its walls. Orientalist painters and romantic travellers have been coming here since the end of the nineteenth century.
The medina of Sousse
UNESCO World Heritage · 1988Entrance included
Ancient Hadrumetum, and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. The ramparts, the ribat, the Great Mosque and the kasbah are all inside one circuit of walls.
The ribat of Monastir
Entrance included
Three days end by the sea at Monastir, the Punic and then Roman town of Ruspina. Its ribat is a fortified monastery facing the Mediterranean, and its tower looks out over the coast.

Day 4
Testour, Dougga and Bulla Regia
- End of the tour
- None included
Testour, the Andalusian town
Testour was founded at the beginning of the 17th century by Moriscos, Muslims expelled from Spain. A panoramic tour takes in its Great Mosque, the finest example of Morisco art in Tunisia, and the minaret whose clock hands famously turn anticlockwise. Before leaving, you taste the cheese the region is known for.
Dougga, ancient Thugga
UNESCO World Heritage · 1997Entrance included
UNESCO listed Dougga in 1997 as the best-preserved small Roman town in North Africa. On its hillside you walk through the theatre, the Capitol, the forum, the baths, the houses, the Square of the Winds, a triumphal arch and the Libyco-Punic Mausoleum, older than the Roman town around it.
Bulla Regia
Entrance included
Bulla Regia is known for its religious buildings, among them the Capitol, the Temple of Apollo and two Christian basilicas, and above all for its villas built partly underground to escape the summer heat, a design found almost nowhere else in the Roman world.
