Overview

Tunis Medina, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd: private day trip with lunch

If you only have one day for the capital, this is the day to choose. It follows three thousand years of history in a single loop around the Gulf of Tunis, from the covered souks of the old city to a Phoenician-founded capital that once rivalled Rome, and ends where painters have come for a century: the white and blue lanes of Sidi Bou Saïd.

The car, the driver and the guide are yours alone. There is no coach to wait for and no stranger to keep pace with, so your guide can slow down for a mosaic, add a coffee stop or skip a site you have already seen.

Arriving by cruise ship? The same day is planned around your all-aboard time from the cruise terminal: see the La Goulette shore excursion.

Highlights

  • Two UNESCO World Heritage sites in one day: the Medina of Tunis and the archaeological site of Carthage
  • Lunch in a local restaurant, included in the price
  • A certified professional guide with you all day
  • Private car from your hotel and back, with no shared coach and no fixed group
  • Sidi Bou Saïd’s viewpoints over the Gulf of Tunis to finish the day

The day, step by step

4 stops, in this order. Your guide may adapt the order to traffic and opening hours.

The route

4 stops · Full day

  1. Pick-upAt your hotel
  2. Stop 1Medina of Tunis
  3. Stop 2La Goulette
  4. Stop 3Carthage

  6. ReturnAt your hotel
  1. The Medina of Tunis

    UNESCO World Heritage · 1979

The old city has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, and it is still lived in. Your guide leads you through covered souks, each once devoted to a single trade, past carved doorways and the Zitouna Mosque, the spiritual heart of the medina.

  2. La Goulette and lunch

The port district of Tunis is known for the constant bustle of its streets. This is where you stop for lunch in a local restaurant, included in the price.

  3. The ruins of Carthage

    UNESCO World Heritage · 1979

Founded by the Phoenicians and rebuilt by Rome, Carthage is a UNESCO-listed archaeological site spread across a seaside suburb rather than enclosed in one park. Its best-known remains, such as the Antonine Baths on the shore and Byrsa Hill, the ancient acropolis, look out over the coast.

  4. Sidi Bou Saïd

The day ends in the blue-and-white village on the cliff above the Mediterranean. Walk its steep lanes of studded doors and wooden balconies, then take in the view over the Gulf of Tunis before the drive back to your hotel.

Good to know

What to wear
The medina is a living neighbourhood with working mosques: shoulders and knees covered is respectful and avoids any problem at religious sites. Bring a light scarf.
Walking
Expect a good amount of walking. The medina lanes are paved but uneven, Carthage is spread over several open-air sites, and Sidi Bou Saïd is a steep, cobbled hill village. Comfortable shoes make the day.
Order of the day
The order of the stops is indicative. Your guide may swap them to avoid traffic or crowds; you always see all four.
Children
Sidi Bou Saïd’s steps are not pushchair-friendly; a baby carrier works better.
