Overview
Dougga, Bulla Regia and Testour: private day trip from Tunis or Hammamet
This is the day for travellers who love archaeology. West of Tunis, the farmland of the Medjerda valley hides two Roman cities that many visitors to Tunisia never see.
At Dougga a whole town still climbs its hillside, from the theatre to the Capitol, among olive trees. At Bulla Regia the Romans dug their homes into the ground to keep cool, and the mosaic floors of those underground rooms are still where they were laid.

Testour, the Andalusian town
Testour was founded at the beginning of the 17th century by Moriscos, Muslims expelled from Spain. A panoramic tour takes in its Great Mosque, the finest example of Morisco art in Tunisia, and the minaret whose clock hands famously turn anticlockwise. Before leaving, you taste the cheese the region is known for.

Dougga, ancient Thugga
UNESCO World Heritage · 1997Entrance included
UNESCO listed Dougga in 1997 as the best-preserved small Roman town in North Africa. On its hillside you walk through the theatre, the Capitol, the forum, the baths, the houses, the Square of the Winds, a triumphal arch and the Libyco-Punic Mausoleum, older than the Roman town around it.

Bulla Regia
Entrance included
Bulla Regia is known for its religious buildings, among them the Capitol, the Temple of Apollo and two Christian basilicas, and above all for its villas built partly underground to escape the summer heat, a design found almost nowhere else in the Roman world.

Good to know
- Walking on uneven ground

- Lunch
- Lunch is not included. Your guide can recommend a place on the way, or bring a picnic.
- Best seasons
- Spring, when the hills around Dougga turn green, and autumn are the most comfortable times. In summer, an early start avoids the midday heat.

Questions about this day
Is Dougga worth it if we have already seen Carthage?
Yes. Carthage was largely destroyed and rebuilt, and its remains are scattered across a modern suburb. Dougga is a complete Roman town on a hillside, with its streets, temples and theatre in place.
Are entrance fees included?
Yes. The entrance fees to Dougga and Bulla Regia are included, along with an authorised guide and private air-conditioned transport.
What are the underground villas of Bulla Regia?
Wealthy families at Bulla Regia built a second storey below ground, around a light well, to escape the summer heat. Several of these houses keep their mosaic floors in place.
Can children come?
Yes. The sites involve walking on uneven ground, so a baby carrier works better than a pushchair.
