Stories of the land

The island where Ulysses’ men forgot to go home

For thousands of years Djerba has been a meeting place of peoples and faiths. Three stories to take home with you.

  1. Homer’s Odyssey

    The land of the Lotus-eaters

In the Odyssey, Ulysses’ sailors taste the lotus on a North African shore and forget their way home. An old tradition places that island at Djerba. Many visitors understand why.

  2. By tradition, 6th century BC

    The stone of El Ghriba

Tradition says El Ghriba was founded by priests who fled Jerusalem after the destruction of the First Temple, carrying a stone from it. Every spring, at Lag BaOmer, pilgrims still come.

  3. 2023

A way of life, inscribed by UNESCO

Menzels, the island’s family farmsteads, small whitewashed mosques like Fadhloun, and the paths that link them: in 2023 UNESCO inscribed this way of settling an island on the World Heritage List.

Come and see why so many travellers stay longer than they planned.
