Stories of the land

Hannibal’s harbour

Sousse was a great port long before it was a resort. Three stories behind its walls.

  1. 9th century BC, by tradition

    Hadrumetum, older than Carthage

Phoenician sailors founded Hadrumetum here, by tradition even before Carthage. Under Rome it became one of the richest cities of Africa, and its mosaics now fill the museums of Sousse and the Bardo.

  2. 203–202 BC

    Hannibal’s last winter

Called home from Italy, Hannibal landed on this coast and spent the winter at Hadrumetum with his army before the battle of Zama. After his defeat, it was here that he rode back.

  3. 821

    The watchtower of the ribat

The ribat, a fortified monastery built to guard the coast, was completed in 821. Climb its round watchtower for the finest view over the medina and the sea.

Your guide will show you the medina the way its garrison once saw it.
