Stories of the land

A capital of scholars, poets and musicians

Behind the doors of the medina, Tunis keeps stories that most visitors walk straight past.

  1. 1332

Ibn Khaldun, a child of the medina

The historian who wrote the Muqaddimah, often called one of the founders of sociology, was born in Tunis in 1332. His statue stands on Avenue Habib Bourguiba, a few steps from the old city where he grew up.

  2. Early 3rd century AD

    Virgil, at the Bardo

One of the most famous mosaics of the Roman world shows the poet Virgil holding a scroll of the Aeneid between two Muses, Clio and Melpomene. Found at Hadrumetum, today’s Sousse, it now hangs in the Bardo Museum.

  3. 1912–1922

The baron of Sidi Bou Saïd

Baron Rodolphe d’Erlanger built his palace, Ennejma Ezzahra, above the sea at Sidi Bou Saïd and devoted his life to recording Arab music. The palace is now the Centre of Arab and Mediterranean Music.
