Stories of the land

The town that painters fell in love with

Long before the hotels, Hammamet was a small walled town on a wide, quiet bay. Three stories your guide can tell you on the way.

  1. Roman times

Pupput, the town beneath the resort

South of the medina lie the remains of Pupput, a Roman town whose houses, baths and mosaics were found among today’s hotels. People have been coming here to live by this sea for close to two thousand years.

  2. Spring 1914

The light that made Paul Klee a painter

Paul Klee, August Macke and Louis Moilliet travelled through Tunisia in April 1914 and painted in Hammamet. Klee wrote in his diary on that journey: “Colour and I are one. I am a painter.”

  3. 1920s

Dar Sebastian and the summer festival

In the 1920s the Romanian aristocrat George Sebastian built a white villa among gardens by the sea. It became the International Cultural Centre of Hammamet, whose open-air theatre hosts the Hammamet International Festival every summer.

Every wall in Hammamet has a story. Let your guide tell you the rest.
