Carthage is about 5 km from the cruise terminal. These are the stories that make its stones speak.

  1. 814 BC, by tradition

    Elissa and the oxhide

    Fleeing Tyre, the Phoenician princess Elissa, Virgil’s Dido, was offered as much land as an oxhide could cover. She cut the hide into thin strips and circled a whole hill with them: Byrsa, where Carthage began.

  2. 218 BC

    Hannibal crosses the Alps

    Carthage’s most famous son marched an army with war elephants over the Alps and fought in Italy for fifteen years. His victory at Cannae is still studied in military schools.

  3. 146 BC

    “Carthage must be destroyed”

    Cato the Elder ended his speeches in the Roman Senate calling for the end of Carthage. Rome destroyed it in 146 BC, then rebuilt it as one of the great cities of its empire: the Antonine Baths by the sea are what remains of that splendour.
