Overview
From Tunis, the road goes along a partially restored Roman aqueduct, reminding us that Tunis, since Antiquity, drinks the spring water of the Zaghouan mountain. On the way, archaeology lovers will appreciate the site of Oudna, a Punic city that became Roman. The villa known as “Laberii” with its thirty rooms on 2 300 m² deserves a special visit for its mosaics, a well-preserved archaeological site includes an amazing amphitheater that could once accommodate 20 000 spectators. Then we will visit the Andalusian medina of Zaghouan, to finish with Thuburbo Majus, an ancient city that experienced a decline in the mid-third century before a brilliant rebirth in the fourth century, which led it to proclaim itself Respublica Felix Thuburbo Majus. The Vandal invasion, in the mid-fifth century, put an end to the prosperity of the city and brought it back to the rank of a city that, shortly after the Arab conquest, was abandoned.
